Label Compliance Checklist
US (FTC) requirements
- Permanent care label with at least one safe care method (Care Labeling Rule, 16 CFR Part 423), legible for the life of the garment.
- Fibre content listed by generic fibre name with percentages in descending order, per the Textile Fiber Products Identification Act.
- Country of origin stated, plus an RN number or the full company name.
EU and UK requirements
- Fibre composition labelling is mandatory (EU Regulation 1007/2011, retained in UK law), using the listed generic fibre names, in the language of the country of sale.
- Care symbols are not legally required in most member states, but ISO 3758 symbols are the accepted standard. GINETEX symbols are trademarked, so check licensing before printing them.
- Country of origin is not mandatory under EU textile law, though customs rules still apply. Labels must be durable, accessible and easily legible.
Care labels are a legal requirement in most markets, not a nice-to-have. In the US, the FTC's Care Labeling Rule means every garment needs a permanent label carrying at least one safe cleaning method, alongside fibre content, country of origin and an RN number or company name. In the EU and UK, fibre composition labelling is mandatory and must use the regulated generic fibre names in the language of the country of sale, while ISO 3758 wash symbols remain the standard buyers and factories expect. Accuracy matters as much as compliance: a wool jumper labelled tumble dry becomes a returns problem, and an over-cautious dry clean only label inflates the cost of ownership for your customer. For the full breakdown of rules, symbols and placement, read our care labels guide, see how care data fits into tech pack software, or check pricing.
