Kōbō and Shopify

Build the product once in Kōbō, push it to Shopify with its variants, barcodes, images and real landed cost. No CSV round trip.

Build It Once
The style you developed becomes the Shopify product, with its variant matrix generated rather than typed.
Real Landed Cost
Shopify holds one cost per variant. Kōbō can push an average weighted across your markets, so margin is close to the truth.
Stock By Location
Multi-location inventory stays separate, so two warehouses don't collapse into one number.
The mapping

From tech pack to storefront, without the CSV.

This is a first-party integration using the Shopify Admin API, not a CSV template or a third-party bridge.

In KōbōIn ShopifyNotes
StyleShopify productTitle, description and product category, matched to Shopify's taxonomy.
Colourway and size runShopify variantsThe full variant matrix generated from your size range, not typed by hand.
SKUVariant SKUGenerated from your own SKU pattern in Kōbō, so warehouse and storefront agree.
Barcode (EAN13)Variant barcodeAssigned from your GS1 pool. Change a SKU later and the barcode stays attached.
Style imagesProduct mediaImages flow Kōbō to Shopify, so the PLM stays the source of truth.
Costed BOMCost per itemIncluding a landed-cost average weighted across your markets, because Shopify holds one cost per variant.
Stock by locationInventory levelsMulti-location, so a Stockholm and a US warehouse stay separate.
Size guide dataMetafieldsFeeds a theme block, which can replace a third-party size-guide app.
How it works

One product record, pushed to the store.

You connect your store once, then choose what flows. The direction that matters is Kōbō to Shopify for product data, because the PLM is where the style actually exists first: the BOM, the specs, the colourways, the approved sample.

Cost is the part most brands underestimate. Shopify stores one cost per variant, but a brand selling into the UK and the EU has two different landed costs for the same garment. Kōbō can push a weighted average across your markets, calculated from per-market forecast units, so the margin Shopify reports is close to the truth rather than a guess.

Stock is handled per location, so a multi-warehouse setup doesn't collapse into one number.

Install and authorise
Connect with your myshopify.com domain, not your custom domain.
Set SKUs and barcodes first
The SKU becomes the Shopify variant SKU and is what your 3PL keys off.
Test on two products
Confirm variants, images, cost and barcodes in the Shopify admin before opening the tap.
Then run the season
Product and cost flow out of Kōbō. Orders and what is on hand stay Shopify's job.
Getting connected

Quick to connect, worth testing small.

Connecting is quick. Agreeing what the storefront owns takes slightly longer and matters more.

01
Connect the store

Install the Kōbō app on your store and authorise it. You will need your myshopify.com domain, not your custom domain.

02
Set your SKU pattern

Do this before the first push. The SKU you generate in Kōbō becomes the Shopify variant SKU, and it's what your 3PL and warehouse will key off.

03
Load your barcode pool

Paste your GS1 EAN13 range into Kōbō. Barcodes are assigned per variant and carried to Shopify automatically.

04
Push a test collection

Two products, not two hundred. Check variants, images, cost and barcodes in the Shopify admin before going further.

05
Choose the cost basis

Decide whether Shopify receives FOB, landed cost for one market, or a landed average weighted across markets.

Good fit

For brands who develop their own product.

You sell direct on Shopify and develop your own product rather than reselling
You run multiple colourways and a real size run, so hand-keying variants hurts
You need barcodes on variants for a 3PL or a retail till
You want the margin Shopify shows to reflect an actual costed BOM
You hold stock in more than one location
Limits, honestly

What to plan around.

One store per workspace today
If you run a separate store for a separate market, for example an Asia store alongside a US and EU store, only one connects today. Tell us if that's you, because it affects the rollout.
Product data flows one way
Kōbō to Shopify for product and cost. Shopify stays the source of truth for orders and for what is on hand right now.
One cost field
Shopify holds a single cost per variant. The market-weighted average is our answer to that, but it's an average, not per-market truth.
Order scopes need approval
Reading your full order history requires a Shopify permission that goes through their review. Start it early or you get a limited window.
Common questions

Before you connect Shopify.

Does Kōbō have a Shopify integration?
Yes, a first-party one built on the Shopify Admin API. It pushes styles as products, colourways and size runs as variants, plus SKUs, barcodes, images, cost per item and stock by location.
Can I stop hand-keying variants into Shopify?
That's the point of it. The variant matrix comes from the size range and colourways you already built in the PLM, so a style with six sizes and four colours creates its variants in Shopify without anyone typing them.
How does cost work when I sell into several markets?
Shopify stores one cost per variant, which is a problem if your UK and EU landed costs differ. Kōbō can push a weighted average across markets, calculated from per-market forecast units, so reported margin is close to reality.
Which way does inventory flow?
Stock is pushed per location from Kōbō, so multi-warehouse setups stay separate. Shopify remains the authority on what has actually sold.
Will it overwrite my existing Shopify products?
Not unless you link them. Styles are matched to products deliberately, and we always recommend a small test collection first rather than a bulk push.
Can I connect more than one Shopify store?
One store per workspace today. If you run separate stores per region, raise it with us before you plan the rollout, because it changes the shape of the setup.
Does the Shopify integration cost extra?
No. API access and integrations are included on every Kōbō plan. There's no per-connector fee.
What about size guides?
Kōbō can push size guide data into Shopify metafields, which a theme block can render. Several brands have used this to drop a paid third-party size-guide app.
