Fabric Types and How to Choose Fabric for Clothing

Fibre content, weave structures, knit types and GSM, plus the fabric specification a factory actually needs before it can quote your style.

Every fabric is defined by three things: fibre content (what it's made from), construction (how it's built, woven or knit), and finish (what's done to it afterwards). Change any one of them and you change how the garment hangs, what it costs, how it's washed, and how long it lasts.

Fabric selection is the decision that quietly sets the ceiling on everything downstream. It drives your cost of goods, your minimums, your sampling rounds, your care label and your return rate. Get it right and the rest of development is tidy. Get it wrong and you find out at first fit, when the pattern is already cut and the mill has already booked the dyeing.

How to Choose Fabric for Clothing

Most people approach fabric selection backwards. They fall for a swatch at a trade fair, then try to force a garment around it, and discover three months later that the mill's minimum is 3,000 metres in one colour. Work in the other direction and the shortlist writes itself.

A five-step fabric selection method

  • 1. Define the job: what does this garment need to do? A structured blazer, a fluid slip dress and a gym legging have three completely different fabric briefs.
  • 2. Set the drape and weight: decide whether you need structure or flow, then put a GSM band on it before you look at a single swatch.
  • 3. Choose construction: woven for stability and tailoring, knit for stretch and comfort. This decision drives your pattern more than fibre does.
  • 4. Choose fibre or blend: now pick the fibre that delivers the hand feel, breathability, stretch and care profile the job needs.
  • 5. Filter on commercial reality: price per metre, minimum order quantity, lead time, and whether the mill will actually sell to a brand your size.

That last step kills more fabrics than any other. A beautiful Japanese selvedge at a 1,000 metre minimum is not a fabric option for a 200-unit drop, it's a wish. Run the commercial filter early and you save yourself a sampling round chasing something you were never going to be able to buy.

Practical shortcut

Ask for hangers, not just swatches. A 10cm square tells you colour and hand feel. A half-metre hanger tells you drape, recovery, how it presses and how it behaves on the bias. Almost every fit surprise comes from a decision made on a square too small to drape.

Natural Fibres

Natural fibres come from plants (cellulose fibres like cotton and linen) or animals (protein fibres like wool, silk and cashmere). They're generally breathable and comfortable next to skin, and they tend to be more variable batch to batch than synthetics, which is worth remembering when you're approving lab dips.

Cotton is the default for a reason: it's available at every quality level, it takes dye well and customers know how to look after it. Linen buys you breathability and texture at the cost of creasing, which is a positioning decision as much as a technical one. Wool and cashmere move you into a different price bracket and a different care conversation, and both need clear laundering guidance on the label.

Synthetic and Semi-Synthetic Fibres

Synthetic fibres are engineered for specific properties: durability, stretch, moisture management or cost. They're consistent batch to batch, which makes colour matching easier, and they're usually blended with natural fibres rather than used alone.

Blends are where most commercial fabric selection actually lands. A small percentage of elastane turns a rigid woven into something people will wear all day. A polyester content in a jersey holds shape through repeated washing. The trade-off is recyclability and, in some markets, how the blend reads to a sustainability-minded customer.

Woven Fabric Types

Woven fabrics are made by interlacing warp threads, which run the length of the roll, with weft threads, which run across it. The weave pattern determines strength, drape, surface texture and how the cloth handles on the cutting table.

Common woven fabrics

  • Poplin: plain weave, crisp, lightweight. Shirts and dresses.
  • Oxford: basket weave, textured, durable. Classic shirting.
  • Twill: diagonal weave, durable, hides marks. Chinos and workwear.
  • Denim: twill weave, cotton, typically indigo-dyed warp. Jeans and jackets.
  • Chambray: plain weave, coloured warp with white weft. A lighter alternative to denim.
  • Canvas: plain or twill weave, heavy duty. Bags, outerwear, workwear.

One practical note on wovens: directional weaves, prints and napped surfaces force a one-way lay, which raises fabric consumption. Decide that at selection, not at marker making, because it changes the costing.

Knit Fabric Types

Knit fabrics are made by interlocking loops of yarn, so they stretch without any elastane at all. They're comfortable, forgiving on fit, and less forgiving on consistency: knits relax, shrink and skew more than wovens, so shrinkage tolerances and a wash test matter more here.

Knits are usually quoted either tubular or open width. Tubular is cheaper to knit but restricts how you lay the pattern, and it can twist after washing. If your style has side seams and any fit precision, open width is normally worth the small premium.

Weight, Width and Consumption

GSM (grams per square metre) is the language of fabric weight, and it's the fastest way to sanity-check a fabric against the garment you have in mind. A 140 GSM jersey makes a summer tee. The same style at 220 GSM becomes a heavyweight tee at a noticeably different price and a different customer expectation. Width matters just as much and gets ignored far more often. The same fabric at 150cm instead of 110cm can cut a meaningful chunk off your consumption per garment, because the marker fits more pieces per lay. Consumption is where GSM and width turn into money: fabric is typically the largest single line in a garment cost sheet, so estimate it properly with a fabric consumption calculator before you commit to a retail price.

Ask the mill for these three numbers

Usable width (not the width including selvedge), weight with tolerance (for example 180 GSM ±5%), and shrinkage after one wash in both length and width. Those three answers prevent most of the costing and fit surprises that show up at proto stage.

Specifying Fabrics in Tech Packs

This is where fabric knowledge either pays off or evaporates. A factory can't buy the fabric in your head. It buys what's written in the tech pack, and every field you leave blank becomes either a question in your inbox or an assumption in someone else's warehouse.

A complete fabric specification is seven fields. Write all seven, every time, and the quoting conversation gets dramatically shorter.

  • Fibre content: "100% Cotton" or "95% Cotton, 5% Elastane" with exact percentages
  • Construction: "Jersey knit" or "3/1 twill weave"
  • Weight: "180 GSM ±5%" or the ounce equivalent
  • Width: "150cm usable" (this drives your yield calculation)
  • Finish: "Enzyme washed", "brushed back", "compacted"
  • Colour: Pantone reference plus a lab dip approval against an agreed lighting condition
  • Shrinkage: maximum acceptable percentage, length and width, after one wash

Two habits separate a spec that works from one that generates emails. First, name the fabric consistently across every style that uses it, so your factory isn't quoting the same cloth under three different names. Second, attach the physical reference: a hanger with a code on it, sent and logged, so "the one we approved" means something specific months later when the reorder goes in.

Sourcing Reality: Minimums and Lead Times

Fabric selection isn't only a technical exercise, it's a buying decision. Mills set minimums per colour, not per fabric, so a five-colourway range in a mill-dyed cloth can multiply your commitment fast. Stock-service fabrics, where the mill holds standard colours in inventory, are usually the way smaller brands get access to good cloth without carrying the dyeing minimum themselves.

Lead time is the other constraint that catches people out. A stock fabric might ship in a fortnight. A custom dye or a custom knit can take two months before your factory even starts cutting, and that sits on your critical path in front of everything else. A reasonable rule: for your first production run, choose fabrics you can reorder. A one-off deadstock roll that makes a beautiful sample is a problem if the style sells and you can't repeat it.

Sustainability Considerations

Sustainable fabric choices matter for brand positioning and, increasingly, for compliance and disclosure. The important discipline is to claim only what you can evidence with a certificate or a transaction document, because unsupported fabric claims are exactly what regulators are looking at.

  • Organic cotton: grown without synthetic pesticides. Look for GOTS certification and keep the transaction certificate on file.
  • Recycled polyester (rPET): made from recycled plastic feedstock, with performance close to virgin polyester.
  • TENCEL and lyocell: wood pulp processed in a closed-loop system, with a soft hand feel and good drape.
  • Hemp: low water use and no pesticides needed, with a texture closer to linen than cotton.
  • Deadstock: surplus mill fabric. Reduces waste, but quantities are fixed and repeat orders usually aren't possible.

Whatever you choose, store the certification against the fabric record rather than in someone's inbox. When a retailer or a marketplace asks for documentation, you want to answer in minutes.

What does a fabric specification need to include in a tech pack?

Seven fields cover almost every sourcing question: fibre content with exact percentages, construction (for example jersey knit or 3/1 twill), weight in GSM with a tolerance, usable width, finish, colour reference with a lab dip approval, and maximum acceptable shrinkage. Leave any of them out and the factory either guesses or emails you, and both cost you a sampling round.

Can you change fabric after sampling has started?

You can, but it usually resets the sample round. A new fabric changes drape, shrinkage and often fit, so measurements taken on the old cloth stop being reliable and the pattern may need adjusting. It also changes your costing, because consumption and price per metre move together. If a fabric change is likely, flag it before the first proto rather than after the fit session.
